Youth PD workshops Sept 2020

In late September, Living Languages partnered up with First Languages Australia (FLA) to pilot and provide a series of six online training sessions to some of the young language workers and teachers that are part of our programs.

These online training sessions came about after having to postpone our Youth Professional Development (PD) Workshop that had been planned for May this year. As a way to keep our participants engaged and involved in training, we developed this small series for them, as well as for participants of FLA’s Young Champions Program.

We held 1-hour online sessions, roughly once a fortnight, focusing on different topics relating to language work or language teaching.

Since September, we have covered five topics, delivered by Living Languages’ trainers Ebony, Amy and Andrew, with guest trainer Nathan Schreiber joining in to deliver a session also. FLA’s Annalee Pope rounded out our team, managing participants, Zoom set ups and advertisement of our sessions. The topics for the training sessions included: Language Teaching Basics, Introduction to Morphology, Introduction to Linguistics, Language Teaching Techniques, and Pronunciation in Indigenous Languages.

It has been a pleasure working with such enthusiastic young people, and we are looking forward to wrapping up the series, with our last session being held on the 8th of December on the topic of Language Project Planning and Team Building.
