Training with Living Languages

Our training aims to support Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people in their language work and efforts to grow and strengthen their languages. We share knowledge and skills for looking after your own language - ways to learn it or teach it, and how to design and manage your own language projects.

Since we began nationally in 2012, our training has supported the language work of Indigenous Language Centres, grassroots Community Language Teams, individuals, and small groups.

When you join Living Languages training, you can also learn skills to share with others in your workplace or community and beyond. We offer different types of training depending on your language goals and needs. Follow the links to learn who we train with; where and how we train; and see our different training options. Alternatively, you can contact us or fill out our Expression of Interest in training.

Community-based Training

Teaching yourself language? Teaching others? Planning a project or just wondering how to get started?

We can plan a workshop or series of workshops especially for your team, language, and situation.

Language Leadership Program

Our Language Leadership Workshops are special occasional events that give you the opportunity to spend an intensive period of time with language activists from around Australia, increasing your skills in linguistics, language teaching, advocacy and project management.

Paper and Talk

Paper and Talk is a two-week workshop held in Canberra, in partnership with the Australian Institute of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Studies (AIATSIS). The workshop provides small groups of Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander people the opportunity to access and recover language materials from AIATSIS and other collecting institutions.

Sharing Circles

Sharing Circles are monthly Zoom gatherings open to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people working with their languages, learning their languages, looking for professional development opportunities or advice, or wanting to expand their networks with others working with language across the country. Each month we cover a different topic.

Start the conversation by filling out our Expression of Interest in training!
