Sharing Circles Continue

Our monthly Sharing Circles have continued to be a culturally safe space for sharing the language and culture yarn, through advice, support, encouragement and making connections. Open to all Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people working or wanting to work with their languages, they are held on the first Thursday of each month.

Our April session was an Indigenous Cultural and Intellectual Property workshop delivered by experts from Terri Janke and Company. It was a great opportunity for participants to ask questions related to the use of law to protect Intellectual Property and Indigenous Cultural Intellectual Property in language resources; as well as looking at trademarking and business models.

Then in May we focused on Sounds in First Nation Languages. Discovering interesting facts and making connections with our own language/s and the language of other mobs is always fascinating, and those who attended were very generous in sharing their knowledge and thoughts.

Finally, June’s session was an introduction to the Living Languages’ Learner’s Guide template. This resource was developed as a guide to help community language workers write a community Learner's Guide for their languages. We walked through how you can use the template, customise it to suit your needs, and answered questions from the group.

A big thank you to everyone who has been a part of the Sharing Circle, we hope the sessions have been useful for your language journey. We also thank the Indigenous Languages and Arts (ILA) program for the funding that makes these sessions possible. We’re taking a break in July to plan out some topics for the rest of the year. Please contact us if there is anything you’d like to see on the schedule, we would really love to hear your suggestions.
